RUFA 2014 – The Power of People

Climbing up Grandeur on Lap 2

Another Running Up For Air Challenge (RUFA) in the books!  Once again I am reminded of the incredible community of outdoor enthusiasts, trail runners, and clean air advocates we have here in Salt Lake City.  Experiencing such positive energy all the way from the parking lot to the summit of Grandeur Peak makes this a very special day.

Weather
It was a  wild day with nearly every type of weather.   Those who start out at 6AM fought gale-force winds to acquire their first summit.  By mid-morning the sun made a brief showing and the weather was actually quite pleasant for a while before a series of cyclical storm cells moved in at the upper elevations.  The evening brought rain down low and periodic blizzard conditions up high.  The wind and snow at night made quick work of the path we had collectively worked so hard to make, masking the signs of recent traffic.

My Challenge
Sadly, I didn’t make my goal of 15 laps, calling it good at 12 laps in 23 hrs 57 min.  I knew the lack of snow below 6,500′ would amplify the leg beating on every descent and I worked to spread the wear-and-tear out.  In the end I called it quits as I rapidly approached the fine line between a constructive workout and long-term injury.  Thanks to everyone who believed in me and a huge THANK YOU to Pat McMurtry, Roch Horton, and Catherine Mataisz for taking such great care of me during the rough laps in the middle of the night.
