Mark your calendars for the 2014 Grandeur Peak Running Up For Air challenge!  This year’s challenge will take place on March 1st, 2014.

Reminder : This is not a race!  For the past two years I have made a personal challenge to run/hike/crawl up and down Grandeur Peak (via the West Side) in an effort to raise money for Breathe Utah, a remarkable non-profit group that works tirelessly to educate, motivate, and make real change in the fight for better air in the Salt Lake Valley.

In 2012 I made ten summitstwelve in 2013, and in 2014 I am challenging myself to 15 summits in < 30 hrs.  Think I’m crazy?  Great!  Show your support by making a financial pledge for each summit I make.  If your legs, lungs, and heart are up to it, join me!  Make a challenge for yourself and find folks to make a financial pledge towards your own goal.   (a more formal way to make a challenge grant will emerge soon).

As with previous additions, I intend to start my day at 6AM and I always love to see friendly faces.  You’re welcome to come at anytime you like.

  1. Valuable info. Lucky me I discovered your website by chance, and
I am surprised why this twist of fate didn’t happened in advance!
    I bookmarked it.

  2. Hey how did it go? Were you able to achieve your goal?

  3. Hi Jared,

Can you tell me more about the hike/run on March 2. I was hiking and met your girlfriend (or wife) Mindy and she told me about the event. I am involved with a few outdoors/hiking meetup groups. If I posted, I’m sure I could get several hikers to also do the hike that day. What I’d like to know is how would this raise money for Breath Utah? Will people sponsor you or other runner/hikers? Who would they send their money to? Will Breath Utah formally post details about the event (that would encourage more participation). Is the hike/run to gain media attention or is it to raise money through the event? Please share whatever details you’d have to offer. I’m sure that most people, like me, would only make it once, twice at the most, but if we were able to get people to sponsor us I’m sure enough people doing so could help. I’m not sue with what time is left how much participation I could get, but I could try…at least to have a good hiking group for the day.

Please provide whatever information you can.

    Thanks,

    Linda

    • Hi Linda,

Mindy (my wife) mentioned that she ran into you, which is great. I’d love it if you’d join us and encourage other to as well. See the latest posting on my blog (link below) for details and let me know if you have any questions. See you on march 1st.

  4. What kind of respirator do you use? Where did you buy it?
    Thanks for the info.
    Grandeur Peak looks like fun.
    John Ballard

    • Hi John,

The best solution in terms of respirator protection and proper seal around your face is the 3M 6297PA1-A. You can pick it up at Home Depot for $25. The replacement filters are very affordable too.

      Best of luck!

      Jared

  5. Hey Jared,

I recently came upon your blog and have been inspired by your accomplishments and general ability to “get amongst it.” This sounds like an awesome event and for a great cause. Is there anything more to it than showing up the day of? It sounds like it has been a great success and a lot of fun in previous years.

    Cheers,
    Colin

  6. Hi Jared,
Looking forward to joining in the fun again this year. Put me down for four laps list year.
    Jack

    • Awesome Jack!

      Jared

  7. Great! Wish I could be there March 1 to do a few. I’d like to do one lap a week from Saturday if you’re interested! Gotta hold our breath until we get above 6,000′.

  8. Sounds fun. Might have to join you. I’ve never climbed grandeur peak. What are the conditions, typically, in early March?

    • Hi Jason, that would be great! Conditions in early March are very unpredictable, which is part of the fun. In 2012 it snowed several feet the day before which made the first few laps really tough post-holing. 2013 was perfect (but still snow covered the entire way). What will 2014 bring?…

  9. I will be there Jared. Shooting for more than the 2 summits from last year. Looking forward to it.
